You Are Called To BELONG!

“To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved,” Ephesians 1:6.

We are social beings by nature and by design. The fancy word for it is gregarious. Even those among us who have a significant need for “me time” are still their absolute best in the context of interaction with others.

I read somewhere once, “You can’t demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit by yourself.” Read that again. I mean think about it: love, joy, peace, forebearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — all of those characteristics are best exemplified INTERACTING with others.

That means the fundamental design of God for us is to be in community - a group of people who share some important things in common. One of those shared element is acceptance, the idea that despite your imperfections, you’ve got a posse, a crew, a group of people who will have your back. Another key ingredient is to share common goals. To be headed in the same direction with some common goals so that the mutual support, encouragement, and experience sharing increases the chances of everyone getting to the intended destination.

Taking part in a meaningful way in a community of faith fulfills all of those needs and so many more. That shared community is what the Bible calls the ekklesia (gathering of the the called out ones) or the koinonia (those devoted to fellowship).
