In the Academy nominated film, Amistad, captured African, Cinque and his fellow prisoners took over the Spanish schooner La Amistad, desperately determined to fight for their freedom and avoid enslavement on shores far from home. The movie is definitely worth seeing. In one of the scenes in the United States Supreme Court, Cinque makes a heart-tugging plea for his enslavement to be overturned with a famous, if not grammatically-correct, line: GIVE US FREE!
Although the words are imperfect, the desperation and determination behind Cinque’s demand reverberates through the ages and inspires us still today. This idea of deliverance, of liberation, is more important now than ever. We all need to be set free from something; but freedom doesn’t come to the quiet or the passive. Sometimes you’ve gotta be willing to take over the ship — an outright mutiny — especially if the captain of the ship is the enemy of your soul.
What’s got you bound? Fear? Addiction? Low self-esteem? The paralysis of analysis? Greed? Pride? Jealousy? It’s time for you to demand your freedom and to get free by any means necessary.
In Exodus 2:23, the enslaved Israelites got God’s attention in this manner: “And the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried; and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.” They SIGHED and they CRIED; and I believe those are two keys to deliverance. You have to get frustrated enough to sigh (internal) and desperate enough to cry (external), and God will hear from heaven and set you free. When you make up your mind to get free, you’ll do the necessary actions to engage heaven and your redemption will draw near.
Just Some Thoughts,
Bishop
