In the old church, we used to sing a song that went like this - “I said I wasn’t gonna tell nobody, but I…couldn’t keep it to myself…what the Lord has done for me.” (Click here if you’re curious to hear the song.)
The truth is, when we really just sit down and think about it, God’s done so much for us, we really oughta tell it. And, honestly, sharing faith is really as simple as that — telling other folks some of what the Lord has done for you.
Those are the other lyrics to the song, in fact: “You oughta been there when He saved my soul. You oughta been there when He put my name on the roll.” That’s what He’s done. He’s saved us from our sins. He has given us new life. He has brought joy on the inside. He has brought us “out of darkness and into His marvelous light,” (1 Peter 2:9).
Several really powerful things happen when we make up our minds to tell our family, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers about what God has done for us. First of all, doing so reminds US of just how good God is, just how capable He is, just how powerful He is. Then the thing that’s currently staring us down gets cut down to size and instead of it towering over you, you tower over it. Oh, glory to God!
Secondly, our sharing what God has done for us serves as a witness to others that they don’t have to stay in the condition they are in. They, too, can taste of His goodness and find that He is “sweeter than the honey in the honeycomb” (Psalm 19:10), and that’s a great contract to the bitterness they are currently facing.
I challenge you to get something on your mind today that God has done for you and find someone to encourage with that good news. Your authentic gratitude will leave an impression and plant a seed that will one day produce a harvest.
Just Some Thoughts,
Bishop
