What’s Love Got To Do With It?

The late, great Tina Turner didn’t just ask this famous question, but she also answered it. “What’s love but a second-hand emotion?”

In a society that has commercialized, romanticized, and, arguably, cheapened love and consequently given us the completely wrong idea about what love it, I think it’s important for us to take another look at what LOVE really is.

After all, it’s the first of the three pillars that are foundational to our church — LOVE. LEARN. LIVE. And we believe these three are sequential; you have to do the first one before you do the second one, and so on.

Love is such a powerful, fundamental emotion that Hollywood has made countless billions of dollars telling one “love” story after another. But there’s more to it than “hips, lips, and fingertips.” There’s so much more to love than physical attraction, goosebumps and butterflies in our stomachs. (Those emotions are GREAT, but they’re not the whole picture.) We will explore this topic more in future installments, but today, let’s consider this:

Love is the greatest commandment. (Matthew 22:36-40)

³⁶ “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

³⁷ Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’^[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’^[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Jesus told them that LOVE is the lynchpin for the ENTIRETY of the Word of God. The instructions given in the books of the law and the books of the prophet could be reduced to a single notion — LOVE. Love God. Love yourself. Love others. What’s love got to do with it???? EVERYTHING!
